Hello everyone! We are approaching the finish line and in just over 2 weeks, the world premiere of Damaged Goods will take the world by storm! Jersey Flix recently caught up with the composer for the film, Michael Valentino to discuss what is was like scoring the picture.
To prepare for the score, Valentino had the difficult task of creating a sound that blended Rich’s (Michael F. McGuick) duel emotions into the main theme of the character. “The beaten down protagonist is trying to convince himself that he is perfectly fine after a recent break-up, but in reality he can’t move on because his heart is broken. So I had to come up with the right melody, instrument, and tempo to reflect his progressive facade as well as the inner turmoil he endures as he fails to move on...and still remind the audience that this is a comedy! When I think about it now, Miceli really threw me a curve ball, but that’s what great directors do!” Everyone at Jersey Flix has heard his score against the film and all we can say is that it’s SPECTACULAR!!... and on exactly the right note! Way to go, Val! =)

JUST ANNOUNCED: Michael Valentino and co-writer/director/producer Michael Miceli WIN BIG at the 2011 LAScreenplay Competition for their hit comedy pilot: TENURE Valentino and Miceli's script came in 3rd place in the BEST TELEPLAY category. The boys partied hard into the night at the Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Blvd. on October 20th and saw the sunrise at Liza's! (Not Minnelli) Congrats guys!!!

Michael Valentino has a gift for creating the perfect score to undertone or even drive the emotional track of any scene. Even before seeing a rough cut of the film, Valentino was able to produce amazing music after discussing pre-production notes outlining how I wanted specific scenes to “feel”. Then, after spending time on the set and ultimately viewing a rough cut, Valentino not only composed and performed the themes, but he was able to tailor them to match each concurrent cut of the film. And his music is remarkably moving.
He is eager to take direction and quickly models his artistic approach to be in sync with the director. Valentino absorbs the energy of each scene and uses that energy as his guiding light when creating his music. His instincts are sharp, his command is strong and his melodies are smooth. I look forward to working on more films with him.

NEW JERSEY SONGWRITER RECOGNIZED BY INTERNATIONAL CONTEST
New Jersey native Michael Valentino recently received the honor of being named Finalist by the Song of the Year Songwriting Contest. Song of the Year is an international songwriting contest supporting VH-1’s Save the Music Foundation. The Song of the Year judges are some of the biggest names in music including many Grammy Award winners.
Song of the Year is excited to recognize Michael for his exceptional songwriting ability for the track, Past Has Gone. Michael competed against songwriters from all over the world for this honor. When asked what inspired the song, Michael commented that
“My memories of friends, family, and experiences comfort me like a warm blanket, but also haunt my dreams. I am getting older than the person who I stare at in my photo albums and the fear of losing what it was at that moment that made me want to pose for that picture reminds me to cherish each passing moment because it will never come again. I really wanted to write a melody that reflected both the warm nostalgia of past memories and also the fear one has about losing what it was at the time that made them so happy those experiences which were burned into memories.”
